In light of being at Art Basel, what is your process for discovering talent to highlight in your spaces?

“When we see a 360 view of that client, we’re able to discover that she is more important that we thought,” he said, noting that they’re able to give her more access to  experiences and services with the brand. In addition to fragrance, skin care has been an important growth driver. Watches are trending above pre-pandemic levels and are growing, he added. The store is a refined art piece in its own right — a pure, cool, cube outside and a warm light-filled oasis inside. It took a lot of time and money to carve out this much space on Rodeo. According to WWD, Chanel first bought the former Lladro building in 2013 for $100 million, then two years later paid $152 million for its own building, which it had been renting, in order to combine the two lots.

Chanel gives me the freedom to create retail experiences that are art. It's been great to have been entrusted with the physical architectural personification of Chanel. Chanel is a client who is always looking to evolve the brand while maintaining the brand history.

I never forgot one prominent architect saying when they were asked about my work, ‘Oh yes, he does dress shops.’ It’s interesting that now these spaces are thought of as fashion boutiques,” he says, laughing. “It’s a beautiful white cube; very, very elegant with very simple windows,” said Marino, who has designed over 200 stores for Chanel, including in Miami. “It’s a beautiful white cube; very, very elegant with very simple windows,” said Marino, who has designed over 200 stores for Chanel, including in Miami. At least 10 years in the making and after three years of construction, Chanel’s stunning new Beverly Hills flagship has opened at 400 N. Clocking in at 30,000 square feet, it’s now the biggest Chanel store in the United States and more than double the size of its previous Rodeo Drive space.

This remarkable project not only strengthens their longstanding relationship with Chanel but also solidifies DCC’s reputation as leaders in the fusion of design and construction. The new Chanel boutique in Miami is modern and edgier, as Miami owns a more youthful arty clientele. Peter Marino built a complete new building for this exceptional Chanel boutique. With more than 200 Chanel stores on his creation list, Peter Marino celebrates Miami, the American art Capital with this new boutique. It is a massive two story cube with white stucco facade and large clear cubic windows with a large volume inside inviting guests to an art gallery store. For Marino, the architectural and interior design hold the same significance in building out the boutique as a celebration of Chanel for an American art capital.

Peter Marino: The Architecture of Chanel

It's within this rich framework that we are bringing to each project an ever-changing architectural context. The work of Coco Chanel was so modern and timeless that it translates extremely well to contemporary architecture and interiors. Chanel has seen in their direct to client models in all three divisions that when they have better control of the client relationship and have one inventory, they can offer more services so the client has a better experience. Marino said they used new sisals made out of resins on the floors, rather than traditional wool carpets. “It’s tongue in cheek and really an homage to Coco Chanel’s upbringing.

Devlin’s multisensory installation of 1,000 plants, shrubs, and trees, in addition to a monumental labyrinth, is all in homage to the 100th anniversary of the Chanel N°5 scent. On Wednesday night, all eyes turned skyward for a choreographed performance of illuminated drones, which formed sparkling outlines of perfume bottles and a silhouette of dame Coco herself. They can be freestanding in malls or outdoor community shopping areas. “It seems to create a market halo for all the points of distribution in that area,” he said. There are 45 additional locations which have been converted to a lease model, mainly at Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue, and a few locations with Bloomingdale’s and Nordstrom. The House of CHANEL, an international company dedicated to luxury, fashion, style and image, was founded in France by Gabrielle Chanel at the beginning of the last century.

Fortunately, art advisor and historian Sharón Zoldan, founder of SZ Advisory in Los Angeles, was available to shepherd me through the zaniness. Touring a group of us through some of the fair’s more exciting minimalist holdings, Zoldan highlighted several pieces expected to fetch tidy sums—among them, an untitled work by Claudio Parmiggiani shown by Simon Lee Gallery. A member of Italy’s Arte Povera movement, Parmiggiani created the cinder-coated panel this year by capturing residual soot from a bonfire in his studio. The result is a ghostly, poetic image that speaks to themes of memory, time, and destruction. The high price-per-square-foot cost of construction can be attributed to the rising costs and limited availability of specialty materials and construction labor, as well as soft costs like architecture and design, Chariff said. As for future Chanel stores, Galantic said they’ve renovated and expanded the Wynn in Las Vegas (which opened in October) and opened CityCenter in Washington, D.C., last July.

“Trying to get a building built during coronavirus, it’s really heroic and hard and stressful” said Marino, who started the project at the beginning of COVID-19. “These times are not fun to build it.” Even if it wasn’t completely done — which fortunately it is — “you can’t miss this incredible December season,” he said. The partners also hold development rights for another 2 million square feet in the neighborhood, where they can build hotels, offices and residential projects. In addition to Gucci, the high-end retail district is home to Hermès, Louis Vuitton, Fendi, Dior, Cartier, Saint Laurent, Prada, Celine, Bottega Veneta and other luxury brands. The Design District has long pursued Chanel, which has since 1994 had a store at Bal Harbour Shops, owned by rival Whitman Family Development. Los Angeles’s Kayne Griffin Gallery, meanwhile, exhibited work by another undersung artist of a trending movement.

Opening May 5, the new 30,000-square-feet store is the largest Chanel boutique in the United States and was a decade in the making. The LA Fashion District is a diverse and vibrant 107-block area home to the apparel and floral industries. Globally recognized as the West Coast hub of fashion, this neighborhood’s roots are steeped in rich culture and history, with a sense of belonging and identity going back over a century. With a distinctive cultural vibe, the LA Fashion District is a place for inspiration and exploration, and continues to evolve.

The luxury retail market has thrived in South Florida throughout the pandemic. In the Design District, Louis Vuitton is working on a larger men’s store, while Marc Jacobs, Amiri and a handful of restaurants are under construction. Chariff Realty Group broker Lyle Chariff, who is not involved in the Chanel lease but is active in the Design District, said Chanel is likely looking to set itself apart from its competitors and remain consistent with its brand.

Located in the heart of the district at 155 NE 41st Street, the new boutique feeds off the area’s mix of design and culture. The store aims to be an art piece in its own right — a pure, cool, cube outside and a warm light-filled oasis inside. The two-floor, 7,600-square foot boutique showcases the house’s ready-to-wear, handbags, shoes, eyewear, fine jewelry and watches. When some other boutiques have more colors, here the entire decor is black and white, in tribute to Coco Chanel. The Miami Design District location will be the latest building design for CHANEL by the New York-based architect Peter Marino. Known for creating spaces that reflect the aesthetic codes of the House worldwide, Marino harmoniously blends the values that define CHANEL – creativity, innovation, craftsmanship, and exclusive materials. A longtime CHANEL collaborator and visionary, Peter Marino continuously embraces the inherent allure and timeless modernity of the legendary House with equal emphasis on architectural and interior design. From sleek white boxes to daring high-rises, each building pairs the architect’s signature modern aesthetic with inspiration taken from the fashion icon and the integration of specially commissioned artwork, reflecting his status as a patron of the arts. “At the time I started doing fashion boutiques in the ’80s, it was considered the tail of the dog in the architecture community.
